Shopping on a Budget

Posted by fashiondevo on May 2, 2007

If you’re looking to save money, one of the best ways to save is to cut down on your unnecessary expenses. This can range from having one less meal at a restaurant every week to moving to a smaller apartment. Cutting down on expenses doesn’t necessarily mean that you don’t buy as many things; you can save quite a bit if you buy the same items at lower prices.

Buying discounted clothes is a great way to save, since you need to buy some clothes one way or another. Though many people, myself included, try to avoid buying clothes we don’t need, sometimes a new job or just boredom with your own wardrobe will prompt you to go clothes shopping. Most clothes in department stores are sold at a significant markup, which means that if you pay attention and wait for a sale or a clearance you can get discounted clothes and pay ½ as much as you would if you were to buy the clothes at their retail prices. This holds true for men’s, women’s, and even children’s clothes in almost every department store in America. Watch for particularly deep discounts right after the holidays when stores are trying to clear out the inventories they’ve built up for the holiday season. Also, look for sales at the end of seasons. Leftover winter clothing is usually sold at deep discounts when spring rolls around, and summer clothes can be picked up for a song in late fall. The best way to pick up discounted clothes at rock-bottom prices is to keep an eye on the types of clothes you want over the course of a few months, not buying until they go on sale. This strategy will let you get the best bargains in retail department stores.

Now a days, you don’t have to shop at places like the Salvation Army, or Goodwill outlet. Many people scoff at the idea of buying pre-owned discounted clothes. Sometimes it can be a fun idea and you can find some really great vintage items. If you’re not up to wearing other people’s clothing you can always go to low-buget stores like Old Navy, Marshall’s and other oulets. Some places, will have suits and dresses from top designers like Polo and Dolce & Gabanna, clothes in great condition at amazing prices. All of these clothing are pretty much like the orginals, the stores allow you to dress in designer clothes at department store prices. It may take a little more hunting in order to track down good deals. However, if you’re willing to sort through the racks and racks of clothes you can often snag some amazing deals.

Tips For Getting Ready for Prom

Posted by fashiondevo on April 25, 2007

Prom is a day that you have been dreaming about for a long time. You are going to want everything to be as perfect as possible from the top of your hair to the style of shoes on your feet. Prom can be a handful when getting ready but with some helpful tips you will be able to handle Prom like a pro.

1. Proms can cost a lot of money so make sure you have enough cash before you buy anything. If you haven’t been saving money in the months before hand, I’m sure your parents will help you with some extra cash. Just be sure not to take advantage of their generosity. By the time you have paid for tickets, bought an outfit and arranged transportation your money might be a little low. Some ways in which you can cut back on some money is by going with a group of friends, maybe even going by yourself. Prom can be very expensive so be careful and spend your money wisely.

2. Have you bought your shoes and accessories yet? If you haven’t, make sure you get your shoes and accessories in a timely fashion. You want to have time to break in your shoes. After all, you don’t want to trip and fall on the night of your prom. When you are buying heels, test them out first. Stand them up on a smooth surface, and tap them a little bit. If the heels fall then that means they are fragile and you have to be careful when walking in them. When you buy your accessories make sure you have the right colors and that nothing clashes with your dress. Your dress is very important part of prom, like you already know. So make sure it is the exact way that you want it. If your dress is not up to part make sure you take it to a tailor to make further adjustments.

3. On the day of prom make sure that all of the shops that you might have to get last minute things from are open. Some of these might include flower stores, dress shops, tuxedo places and many more. The worst thing that could happen is that the store of which your date’s tuxedo is from is closed on the day of prom.

4. If you want a corsage for prom night make sure you go with your date to pick out what color you want and the arrangement in which you want your flowers. Most guys don’t know what type of corsage to get and chances are he will wind up getting something that you might not like. Also make sure you remind him to pick up your corsage and put it in the fridge before he picks you up for prom. Your date might have a lot on his mind and forget to pick it up.

5. Make sure that you confirm all your appointments at least 3 weeks before prom. You want to make sure that everything runs smoothly. Confirm all hair, nails, transportation, and make-up. Be sure that your date has everything together as well, after all you want to make sure things are perfect for the big night. When you get your hair. Make sure to wear a button down shirt when you have your hair done. You don’t want to mess up your fresh do.

6. Last but not least, enjoy yourself, everything always has a way of working out even if it’s not according to plan. Prom is fun and stressing about it will only make it a bad experience.

Edwardian Jewelry

Posted by fashiondevo on April 25, 2007

edwardin.jpg At the beginning of the Edwardian period Edward VII, the eldest son of Queen Victoria was King. During the Edwardian period you could see elegance and luxury among the rich and powerful in everything that they own and wore. Times however become hard once King Edward passed away and the war broke out 4 years later.

The Edwardian period as we know was a short time between 1901 and 1910 but during the time period the jewelry that was established and created was simply breathtaking work. Most of the jewelry centered around what appeared to be lace that was constructed with platinum and diamonds. It was clearly high-class society art. One piece in which designers of this time period loved to work with were gemstones and particularly in the shapes of pears. The strength that the platinum carried allowed invisible settings to the metal, which gave the jewelry a soft thin, lightweight appeal, which captured the femininity of the fashion at the time.

Since feathers and lace was a favorite to many at in this time period platinum was the best metal to make such open work designs, which often mimic that style. It also created the perfect edges for the uses of diamonds and filigree.

One of the biggest influences of jewelry fashion was The Princess of Wales, also know as the wife of Edward. Her name was Princess Alexandra. When she was traveling in India she fell in love with the jewelry worn by the Indian princess so she too embraced her style. Her two favorites styles included the sautoirs which were long ropes of chains or pearls that ended in tassels and the diamond aigrettes which were feathers worn as hair ornaments. Alexandra also had a favorite stone called the amethyst which possessed a beautiful contrast of widely used palettes of white on white and beautiful soft pastels.

Some other time periods that had an influence is Edwardian jewelry involved the Rocco and Neo-classical Eras. The styles include designs such as flowers, wreaths, garland, and swag design motifs. As well as the Victorian bow which was produced in fine mesh in order to resemble some of the delicate fabrics and styles of the current fashion trends.

Platinum was also used to create other styles such as brooches, rings and pendants. Most of the jewelry during the Edwardian time period was very expensive but there were less expensive choices to choose from if you didn’t have the means. Some of these pieces included the half hoop bangles which were set with pearls, bar brooches, diamonds, colored stones, gypsy rings which were worn by both women and men, half hoop, snake rings and gold chains bracelets that were set with pearls and turquoise. Another feature that was very popular was star setting.

Edwardian jewelry will always be classy, elegant, luxurious pieces that are still high in demand even today. One can only wonder what other wealthy pieces could have been produced if it was not for the war which put an end to all of the prosperity and beauty that was used in the jewelry. One could try to resemble their beauty but the art will never truly again be recaptured.

There are still places where you can buy Ewardian Jewelry sites such as http://www.faycullen.com/edwardian_jewelry.html carry many pieces. As well as Ebay where you are more likely to find orginal pieces.
